1. Nick is the narrator. He seems on the shy side of things and his biases are against tom because he talks about him like hes some sort of player mean type of dude whos really cocky and rich.
2. i think he gets a sign of someone whos not directly involved with everything but has an opinion on things. its a way to tell the story from a semi outside view and semi not.
